NINETY MILE BEACH. AN UNSYMPATHETIC MINISTER. The Minister of Public Works, replying to a letter from the Kaitaia Chamber of Commerce urging the desirability of constructing an all-weathei route between Waipapakauri and the Ninety Mile Beach, stated that aftei reviewing the position in the light ol the information placed before him by the chamber, he was unable to depart from the decision already arrived at. : Four reasons for improvements to ' the road were given in the letter to !the Minister, namely: (1) The road : gives access to a number of settlers; (2) it is used very extensively by farmers of the district during week-ends, especially in summer; (3) it gives ac- ! cess to the very extensive toheroa jbeds which are a source of food for : many natives and pakehas in the district; (4) it gives access to an alternative route to the Far North.
