DEVERELL SHIELD FINAL OLD GIRLS AND HINEMOA DRAW OTHER MATCHES. The final of the Devercll Shield competition in the men’s Thursday hockey series was decided at Kensington Park yesterday afternoon, Rovers winning a hard-fought game by 5 goals to 3. Two ladies’ matches were decided and Old Girls and Hinemoa provided the most interest by drawing with two goals each. Old Girls still lead the competition by three points from Hinemoa.

An exceptionally cold wind made for invigorating conditions. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Ladies. Old Girls 2, Hinemoa 2. Horn Hora 3, White Star 2.. Portland 4, Onerahi 0. Hikurangi B 1, College 0. Wesley I,' Karamea 1. Men. Rovers 5, Pirates 3, DRAWN GAME, TWO BEST TEAMS. Old Girls and Hinemoa, the two loading teams in the ladies’ A section, played a drawn game on No. 1 ground. Play was fast and oven and provided an interesting struggle. Not long after the commencement, Old Girls scored. Miss E. Simons shooting from a difficult angle, Hinemoa were not to be denied and a little later Mrs Carnac, by fast following, centred beautifully for Miss 0. Harris to net. Play continued to be of a very even nature, both sides attacking in turn, but eventually Old Girls worked to the circle and Miss Simons again found the net with a well-judged shot. —Old Girls 2, Hinemoa 1. Miss Gun- had an attempt a little later, but the Hinemoa defence was very sound and play swinging round put Old Girls ou the qui vivo. Miss Kelly was called upon to clear a strong shot, but things still looked dangerous until Miss Burch lifted the siege by hard hitting. There was no further score tvhen the interval came.

In the .first minutes of the second spell Mrs Carnac ran swiftly up the line and, centring accurately, made matters look lively, but Miss Burch again stopped. But Hinemoa were still pressing dnd worked up again. In the ensuing scuffle in the goal mouth the ball went into the net and the scores were equal—Old Girls 2, Hinemoa 2. Old Girls retaliated, but could not break through the defence. Miss Harris cleared well and a period of up-and-down-field play ensued with Hinemoa. making numerous breaks through. Once Old Girls were very close to scoring, Miss- Stewart hitting the ball ever the top of the net. Though both sides were fighting strenuously there was no further score when time was called. Mr H. Patterson was referee.

HORA HORA WIN. WHITE STAR GO DOWN. Horn Horn beat White Star by 3 goals to 2 in a keenly contested match on No. 2 ground at Kensington Park. The game was even throughout and the result was in doubt until the end. Misses E. Richards (2) and U. Hirtzell scored for Horn Hora and Misses T. Courtney and D. Hayward for While Star. Mr V. Simpson refereed.

WIN FOR PORTLAND. ONER AHI BEATEN. The field at Portland was in bad order, tussocks making conditions difficult and at times dangerous. Onerahi won the toss. After the first bully play swung up and down field the ball then travelling out to the wing and Miss M. Williamson shot a beautiful goal. ' Onerahi was being kept busy on defence, the goalie saving on several occasions. Portland still pressed and the ball again came to Miss Williamson who made no mistake in netting. At half-time the score was 2—nil in Portland’s favour.

Changing over, Onerahi was playing with the sun in their faces, and with the bad state of the field, play was confined for a while in their own territory. Portland were attacking very solidly and kept the Onerahi backs busy. Miss McLean, who got away on several occasions only to bo stopped by the long grass, was on the verge of

scoring. The Portland full-back was safe and made good use of her shots by sending play into. Onerahi territory. The next score was shot by Mrs Har-J ris. Play continued to move up-and-down. Portland had a corner hit and Mrs' Harris again netted. The final score was: Portland 4, Onerahi 0. Portland played a hard battling game. Oncrahi did not have their usual Thursday team. Messrs N. Munro and E. Beasley refereed. • _ J SHIELD HOLDERS DECIDED. ROVERS, SUCCEED. The final for the Deverell Shield in the men’s section did not produce hockey of a very high standard, but the game was fast and at times interesting. Rovers played two short until half-time. Hard hitting and a certain amount of clever stick work characterised play. Simpson (2), Tupp, Maddren - and Ferguson netted for Rovers and Wilson, Hannam and East for Pirates, making the final tally read: Rovers 3, Pirates 3. Messrs Goddard and Laurie refereed.
