PORTLAND
Football and Basketball. At the annual basketball and .football tournament at the Portland School, the visiting teams were Otaika and Onerahi. The weather was fine, but a strong south-westerly wind made the goal-shooting somewhat difficult. The games, which were controlled by the lady teachers, were played in a fine sporting spirit. The results of the basketball were: — Onerahi A, 8 points; Otaika, 7 points; Onerahi B, 6 points; Portland A, (i points; Portland E 5 points; Onerahi 0, 4 points. The football games were keenly contested, and some very good matches were played. Portland A and P> teams had been keen rivals for first place, and the honours up to the day of the final match appeared to be with the A team. However, they had miscalculated the prowess of their opponents, and to their surprise B team won the contest —three points to nil: —Portland B, 8 points; Portland A, (1 Points; Onerahi A, 1 point; Onerahi B, 2 points; Otaika, 2 points. The “bantams” gave a good exhibition of juvenile football. The vim and energy these youngsters displayed were remarkable. Portland was victorious. When the games were finished afternoon tea was dispensed by a committee of ladies, assisted by members of the girls’ basketball teams. Three cheers for the ladies who had provided’ the refreshments ended a most enjoyable afternoon.
