HEAVY DOWNPOUR
OVER INCH OF RAIN. HAILSTONES AT EUATANGATA. The rain which started to fall yesterday afternoon continued during the night, and at 12.30 a.m. culminated in a terrific deluge which lasted for 10 minutes, all streams quickly running in high spate. For the 24 hours ended at 9 o’clock this morning a total of 1.13 inches of rain was recorded to have fallen in Whangarei.
In the Ruatangata district the fall was heavier, and reached 1.23 inches, bringing the total for the month in that district to 6.77 inches. In the middle of the heavy downpour at Ruatangata hailstones fell, but no damage has been reported. The roads in the same locality are also clear, but at the height of the storm there must have been a veritable stream of water on the road surfaces. All mud patches have been scoured away.
The country this morning presented a bright face, and with the. milder temperatures prevailing exceptional growth should result. . iSo far all main roads are reported to be unaffected by the rain. Members of the Whangarei representative hockey teams were caught in the downpour on their return from Dargaville, but they report that it did not delay their progress. One ear had the unfortunate experience of suffering a puncture during the deluge.
