WIN AND DRAW

j WHANGAREI REP. HOCKEY. MATCHES AT DARGAVILLE. VISIT YESTERDAY. I : . j The Whangarei ladies’ and men’s reiprcsontativo hockey teams visited Darjgaville yesterday afternoon and played I the Northern Wairoa representatives. | The Whangarei men’s. team won their j match by four goals to one, and the j ladies drew, four goals each, j The rain interfered with the play to some extent and the ground was not in | a very good state. The mud naturally ; retarded a good exposition, but both matches were interesting and well

fought out. After the games the Whangarei teams were entertained to tea and later at a dance in the Municipal Buildings.

LADIES’ TEAMS EVEN. A KEEN BATTLE. Despite the atrocious conditions at j Pelwyn Park, the ladies’ match was j fast and even, with Northern Wairoa 1 combining well and keeping matters 1 moving. But the Held did not allow | first-class hockey, and the ball in a few minutes became unrecognisable j and once was buried in the mud. Whangarei opened the game- by attacking solidly, and when half-time came had gained the lead by throe goals to one. Misses Simona, Tibbits and Doel scored for Whangarei. The Northern Wairoa wings were proving to be .difficult propositions and their forwards were backing up well. Before the end Wairoa had put on three more goals, but Whangarei again scored when Miss Simona beat the goalie with a strong shot. There was no further score before time was called. For Whangarei, Miss Simons played an outstanding game and Miss Doel was the best of the forwards. Miss Kelly in goal defended well and saved many hard shots.

WHANGAREI TOO GOOD.

MEN’S TEAM SUCCESSFUL, Tlio Whangarei men’s representatives, displaying surprising combination, beat Northern Wairoa by 3 goals to 1. The teams lined out: — Northern Wairoa (white). —-Court (captain), G. Way, Haekett, Montgomery, McLaren, Wilson, S. Davis, Alexander, D. Davis, C. Way, Sills. Whangarei (blue).— Presswood (captain), Saul, Brownrigg, Wilson, Hall, Foster, Kelly, Beesley, Forbes, Maddren, Angelo. Forbes won the bully , and the blue forwards started a series of- invasions round the Wairoa goal, but the nature of the ground was in the defenders’ favour. The whites conceded' a penalty corner which was of no avail and play centred round midfield until the white forwards started a rush. Brownrigg sent the ball back to the other end and Foster gave Kelly a good pass. Kelly centred to Beesley, to Forbes, to Angelo who gave the goalie no chance. —Whangarei 1, Northern Wairoa 0.

Prom the bully Forbes and Beesley again broke away but McLaren stopped and passed to his own forwards. However, Hall saved well. The whites came again and their determination nearly got them through. Saul was passed but Wilson galloped round behind him and saved the day, clearing to the side line. From the roll in, Hall cleared and the blue forwards gained possession. Angelo passed across field to Beesley, who passed G. Way and scored, Angelo following up to make sure. —Whangarei 2, Northern Wairoa 0.

Half-time was called soon after. On resuming Forbes again broke away, but the centre half was up to his tricks and robbed him of possession. Foster sent the ball upfield, but Court cleared to his own forwards and the attack broke down. Presswood cleared. The whites were playing one full-back and continually putting the Whangarei forwards offside, but the blues, with a lead of two goals, chose to play safe. An infringement gave the blues an advantage which they followed up, Beesley going right through one bunch and scoring his second goal. 3, Northern Wairoa 0.

The whites retaliated and halves and forwards bunched in one rush, but Presswood and Brownrigg them cleared. They came on again and this time their weight told and forced the ball into the not. —Whangarei 3, Northern Wairoa 1. Time sounded with the blues pressing hard. The Whangarei combination was good and would have shown up bettor on a hard ground. Forbes, Beesley and Maddrcn were at their best. The blue halves overshadowed the rest of the players, Presswood, Brownrigg and Saul were safe. Wairoa’s stickwork was not as good as Whangarei’s, but McLaren, G. Way, and Court showed up well. The goalie, Hackett, stopped many shots and could’ not be blamed for letting three hot ones through, •* Return Match. A return match will probably be played at Whangarei next week. BORDEN CUP CONTEST.

WAIPA BEATS TARANAKI. (Per Press Association. —Copyright.) NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. In a challenge match for the Norton Cup, played at Waitara, the Waipa (Waikato) hockey team defeated Taranaki by three goals to one in an excellent game.
