NICOL TAKES N.Z. TITLE.
CAMPBELL BEATEN ON POINTS. '
(Per Press Association.—Copyright.) INVERCARGILL, This Day.—
The heavyweight professional boxing championship of New - Zealand changed hands last night, when Ray Nieol (Ohai), 12.5, defeated Allan Campbell (Timaru), 12.fi, on points in a contest for 15 rounds, which also carried a purse of £l5O. The bout *
was staged in the Civic Theatre, which was crowded.
The contest was marred by a good deal of clinching and wrestling and the referee was kept busy separating the men. In the opening rounds Nicol took a slight load, but from the sixth round on Campbell appeared to more advantage. His punching was cleans or and ho made Nicol miss frequently, Nicol was the aggressor, but found his opponent very elusive. In the last round there was plenty of action, but not a great deal of clean hitting. Nieol won that round. The decision in favour of Nicol was particularly well received. Billy Sullivan (Hastings) has challenged the winner.
