SWIM IN ICY WATER

Swimming 75 yards through icy water at Governor’s Bay, at the head of Lyttelton Harbour, last evening, Mr G. Healey rescued Mr T. Manhire from drowning, after Mr Manhire had fallen into the sea from the jetty. Mr Manhire is a moderate sw'immer, but ho was hampered by his heavy clothes, and was carried out by the ebbing tide. He appeared 20 yards from the shore, calling for help and drifting out rapidly. A life-buoy was i Hirown, but failed to reach him. Mr Healey then stripped and swam out with a rope, reaching Mr Manhire whoa he was 75 yards from the shore. A third man pulled them to safety. Mr Manhire was exhausted when he reached the jetty.
