WHANGAREI CLUB’S MEETING

SUCCESS INDICATED,

Motor *cycle racing is a aport which has come-to Stay in the Whangarei district and the meeting of the WhangArci Club, at Kensington Park this afternoon was well supported by the public. When the sports were postponed on account, of the weather on Labour Day, at least 2000 people were turned away, and an overcas sky and unsettled conditions during the past week gave indications of further disappointment, but the weather relented during' the morning. Severn riders Who had trial spins this morning report the track to be in good condition although on the heavy side. Most Of the riders, who had entered for the Labour Day meeting, are competing and several additional entries have- been 'received. A notable nonstarter is E. Ranby.

There was quite a large gathering of spectators when the programme opened at 1.30 p.m. with many others travelling towards the venue, indicating distinctive success. The Whangarei Municipal. 'Silver Junior Band enlivened the procedings with a choice selection of music. Several improvements in arrangements w r ere introduced for the convenience of the public. Especially appreciated was the announcing, wjhlcii was from a microphone situated on the members ’ stand. Under the direction of Mr R. H. Barnsley three loud speakers were placed at vantage points in the enclosure, and the spectators were kept well informed of what was transpiring by Mr. G. Butter (sports announcer for IYA) and Mr M. J. Sommerville.

The results at the time of going to •press are appended. The distance in each event was seven circuits of the course —approximately 6$ miles.

NASTY ACCIDENT,

(luring the first race, W. Herbert, riding a 3$ h.p. Indian, came off his machine at the north ’end of the track. Herbert, travelling at a good speed, just touched the rear of another machine, and, to avoid a serious collision, swerved, with the result that his machine skidded violently, throwing him 10 feet into the air. In falling, he struck his head on one of the posts enclosing the course. Ambulance men of the St. John Division were immediately on the scene, and the, injured . rider; received, attention. Fortunately, Herbert was not seriously hurt, though ho was unconcious for sonic minutes. .He is suffering from slight concussion. His machine was considerably* damaged. Herbert, later sufficiently recovered to race again today.
