TAXATION INCIDENCE
PRESENT METHOD WRONG. UNIFORM BASIS WANTED. “ALL IN THE SAME BOX.” (Per P*ess Association. —Copyright.) HASTINGS, This Day. ■Speaking on the question of taxation at a meeting of the Hastings Chamber of Commerce, the president, Mr J. S, McLeod, strongly advocated its fair distribution.
He declared: “If the country had a uniform system under which taxation was equitably distributed according to earnings, we would not have the anomaly of having ,a tax-free section of the community living in complete indifference to the great taxation borne by other sections. If taxation was uniform, all would be in the same box and one and all could say to ourselves that government was costing too much and we could unite to oppose it.” The following rcsolutiolx was earried unanimously; “It is recognised that a certain section of farmers is •lightly taxed, but a small section is now being asked to bear excessive burdens, the withdrawal >. of the mortgage exemption going to punish, very unjustly, a large number and we feel there will bo no resolution of these anomalies until a universal system is adopted, based on income. The attitude of this chamber is that every man should pay his fair share of taxation in proportion to his income and that no section of the community should be penalised in order to lighten the burden of any other section.”
ANOTHER VIEWPOINT,
. SUPER TAX TOO HARSH. (Per Press Assocmtion.—Copyright.) PALMERSTON N., This Day. The Biidf&t proposals were the subject Of criticism at a General Commit tee 'Sheeting of the Manawatu A. and P, Association which passed a resolution:—That this committee views with alarm the super tax ’on farming lands proposed by the present Government and earnestly suggests that any extra taxation should only apply to holdings ■of the value of £20,000 and upwards; also that the mortgage exemption remain as at present
