FRENCH CHAMBER TUMULT
SOCIALIST ACCUSATIONS RHINELAND SOLDIERS’ DEATHS. (Australian Press Association.) (Received 8.32 a.m.) PARIS, May 15. There was three hours’ pandemonium in the Chamber of Deputies, arising out of Socialist allegations that 300 French soldiers in the Rhineland had, died owing to neglect during the recent Arctic weather. Insults were bandied across the Chamber.
M. Painlevo pointed out that throughout Europe the influenza epidemic had been most severe, and from which in the Rhineland 40 soldiers had died in January, 167 in February and 56 in March to date. M. Painleve explained that the medical staff was overtaxed. He took measures himself as soon as he was acquainted with the situation. He deeply regretted the heavy death roll. He expressed the opinion that General Treves was at fault. Punishment would be inflicted without regard to rank or title. Steps had been taken to prevent, a repetition.
