SPECTACULAR FIRES
JAPANESE TOWN SWEPT DESTRUCTION OF 1200 HOUSES. GALE FANS THE FLAMES, (Australian Press Association.) (Received 7.30 p.un.) TOKIO, March 14, Troops were called out. to assist firemen to suppress a conflagra-tiion at Issioka, a town north-cast of Tokio. The fire took place during a violent gale, which raged all night long. Twelve hundred houses were burned, as well as a post office. No casualties are reported.

FORTY ENGINES ENGAGED
BIG FACTORY DEMOLISHED.
(Australian Press Assn.—United Service,) (Received 9 a.m.) LONDON", March 14. A great fire broke out at Deptford, London, at midnight. The debris was still smouldering at 10 a.m. today. The flames destroyed hundreds of tons of printing paper belonging to A. Lloyd and Sons, Limited. Two' hundred firemen, who utilised 40 fire engines, had a desperate fight on the blazing wharve?. One hundred and fifty people who were asleep in the adjoining houses were awakened. Finally the fire was confined to the wharves, thanks to a fortunate change in the direction of the wind. The damage caused by the outbreak is estimated at £IOO,OOO.
