“EVIL OMEN”
WARTIME CONFLAGRATION DESTRUCTION OF ZEPPELINS. SETBACK FOR GERMANY. (United Press Assn. Copyright.) (Received 11 a.m.) BERLIN, February 2. The recently reported arrest of an ex-sergeant-major of the German Army, alleged to have been a spy in British pay and to have prevented a proposed Zeppelin raid over London, although not officially confirmed, has set all Germany speculating on the cause of the staggering catastrophe in the destruction gf the Ahlhorn airship station, which hitherto had been jealously guarded. The newspapers lengthily review the conflagration, pointing out that the official! theory of the baffling occurrence at the time was that it was accidental.
It is declared that the whole Navy stood aghast before the ruins. It was an evil omen for the year 1918. Nearly the entire garrison was in barracks when, without warning, the countryside became illuminated by an immense column of flame from the hangars, COO feet high. There was a terrific report. The barracks shook and buildings collapsed in startling succession. The three remaining hangars blew up, although separated by half -a mile. The ground was littered with delbris for miles.
Five Zeppelins were destroyed, 30 men killed and 100 injured.—A. and N.Z,
