PLANTING FORESTS.
PROMISING ENTERPRISE,
ROTORUA, This Day,
Yesterday large numbers of visiting members of the Press were shown over the Government nurseries and forest reserves. During their stay here they have taken great interest in the method of propagation and growth of the thick woods that clothe many of the hills behind Whakarewarewa, and have received much information from the officers of the Department. In particular the rapid growth of Californian redwoods has been a great surprise. Where the locality is suitable and there is not too much wind, redwoods at Rotorua grow nearly as fast as pinus insignus. They far outstrip the native trees in the reserves. There are specimens 70 feet in height which could be milled tomorrow, if required. Few visitors realise the enormous amount of work done in tree planting. There is an idea of constructing a road through the plantations, so that not only may a drive through these great forests be added to the usual sight-seeing trips, but the public may also obtain an insight into the magnitude of the operations of the Department. —Press Assn.
