BOROUGH BALANCE SHEET.
THE AUDITOR'S TAGS
REFUND DEMAND WAIVED
That success was achieved by the Deputy Mayor, Mr W. U. Timewell, on his recent mission to Wellington to interview the Auditor-General regarding the tags on the borough balance sheet last year was shown by correspondence and discussion at the meeting of the Whangarei Borough Council on Monday evening. The tags related to cost of making a display of electrical fittings at the Whangarei Winter Show, and also to the cost of purchasing the Mayoral robes.
The solution was indicated in a letter from the Auditor-Genera 1 in which he admitted, after having been interviewed by the Deputy Mayor, that he had found that the population of Whangarei on March 3.1, 1924, might fairly be taken as 5000, which put the borough unauthorised expenditure on the basis of £100 a year. He so regarded it, and it was implied that the tost of the robes could therefore be made a charge against that fund.
With respect to the Winter Show exhibition of electrical fittings, the Audi-tor-General wrote that in view of the regular practice of providing by legislation for exhibition expenditure by local bodies, lie was unable to allow the outlay as other than "unauthorised," lint if he was assured that it would be so treated hi future by the Council 'lie was prepared to forego action for refund on the present Decision. Cr. .T. E. Holmes considered that t'te Council should express its thanks to both the Auditor-General and the Deputy Mayor for the successful manner in which t'he matter had been dealt with, when the latter visited Wellington. Or. A. T. Brainsby, however, protested that if the Auditor-General were inn king it a condition that the Council could not make an advertisement in future except by unauthorised expenditure there was not much to thank hi re. for. He did not like the Council lining bound by such a condition. The motion of thanks to the AuditorGeneral and Deputy Mayor was then carried.
