PARKS RATES.
MINISTERIAL VIEW.
J-Iregarding the desire for an amendment- of the Municipal Corporations :W to provide for a park rate in ac■■'.rdanco with the remit passed at tho lv>t" Municipal Conference, the Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs, advised the Whangarei Borough Council on Monday evening that, in view of the representations made by the Borough Council, he would be gla'l to consider the matter w T hen an amendment of the Municipal Corporations Act was being dealt with. He could not, however, indicate whether it would be possible to deal with an amendment of that Act during the present session of Parliament. He pointed out that separate rates, as indicated in the town clerk's statement, might at present be levied for certain purposes, but all these purposes, with the possible exception of one, were for matters of necessity. It was also mentioned that to smiie extent, at least, parks were frequently revenue earning, and he thought it undesirable in such cases t'ii." t power should be given to levy a separate rate. It was possible, therefore, that if the power asked for were given it should apply only to such juries or reserves as were not revenue 'producing. The Deputy Mayor, Mr W. IT. Tiwiev/ell, moved, seconded by Cr. E. G. W. Tibbit.s, that the letter be received, and that; course was adopted.
