Action Demanded To Save Europe
INNOCENT LIVES AT STAKE LONDON, Nov. 26. An appeal to the British Government to take further measures "to save Europe from dying on our hands, ’ ’ was made by the Archbishop of York, Dr. Garbett, at a meeting in the Albert Hall over which he presided. He said that the Government should discourage the mass migration of Germans from the east, and urged that America should increase its help. ‘ ‘ The German State, through its tyrannies and cruelties, has brought these sufferings to Europe, but we must not complacently watch the full penalties fall on those who had little or no part in their crimes," he said. Air Vice-Marshal de Crespigny made a plea for the use of the R.A.F. to save children from selected areas in central Europe from death this winter. He said he was reliably informed that the deaths of 5,000,000 or 6,000,000 people, the majority of which are children must be expected in the British and American zones during the winter. He proposed that children under seven years of age should be flown to England for the winter. One squadron of transport planes, working for a month, would he sufficient for the task. Many of these children were living in cellars without proper food and warmth. In many areas, the toll of innocent life and general conditions would approximate those of Belsen.
