Jews Impede Search for Illegal Immigrants
Received Monday, 8.50 p.m. LONDON, Nov. 26. Two hundred Jewish illegal immigrants from Europe landed in Palestine from a Greek schooner and disappeared into nearby Jewish settlements before a British naval patrol intercepted the ship. The crew were arrested. Three thousand Jews gathered to impede the search for the illegal immigrants, says Reuter’s correspondent, and a showdown between the settlers and the military police is feared imminent. More than 3000 Jewish soldiers in Italy hunger-struck on Friday as a protest against British policy in Palestine. Some units staged a one-day work stoppage. One Jewish officer told an Associated Press correspondent that some Jewish soldiers from the American forces joined in the demonstration. Jews armed with automatic weapons on Saturday night attacked two police coastguard stations, wounding six British police and eight Palestine police, says the Associated Press’ correspondent in Jerusalem. The attacks were apparently connected with the British seizure of the Greek motor schooner which put ashore 200 Jewish illegal immigrants. A Royal Naval patrol later detained 12 Jews aboard two trawlers, wh<s are suspected of helping illegal landings. Troops of the Sixth Airborne Division have surrounded three Jewish settlements near Tel-Aviv as a result of attacks on a coastguard station.
