All Broken Hill Mines Now Idle

Received Monday 7.45 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 26.

All six Broken Hill Proprietary mines in New South Wales are now idle because of the steelworks dispute. The daily loss of coal is 9000 tons and fears are held that stoppages on the coalfields may become more widespread. The general president of the Miners’ Federation (Mr. H. Wells) said the Government should take some action to make the Broken Hill Proprietary recognise the elected officials of any workers’ organisation. ‘‘The Government has sufficient power to force the Broken Hill Proprietary to meet the officers of the Ironworkers’ Union to settle this dispute,” he added. Eleven mines are idle in New South Wales today for a production loss of 13,620 tons.
