Further Increase in City’s Population Total

AMENDED FIGURES FOR KAIRANGA AND MANAWATU, A further increase of 606 in the population of Palmerston North is announced in amended census figures released in Wellington yesterday. The new total is now 25,260, as compared with 22,202 at the time of the 1936 census, and gives Palmerston North a clear lead over both Invercargill and Wanganui. Other amended returns released are as follow: Counties: Kairanga 5667 (5358), Manawatu 6244, includes military camps (5282), Southland 23,361 (26,076), Wallace 8630 (10,034), Fiord eight (19). Boroughs: Mataura 1547 (1500), Gore 4993 (4635), Winton 991 (877).
