Topdressing By Aeroplane

There is a growing interest in the possibility of topdressing hill country by use of the aeroplane. Massey College has recently taken the initiative in an attempt to arrange for trials of this method and there is great interest in the subject in the Gisborne hill country district.

In both America and Russia the aeroplane has been very considerably used in agriculture. Doubtless there will be complications to be overcome in practical adoption of the methods under New Zealand conditions. Overseas the plane has been employed across flat landscapes of large extent. Here in the Dominion the purpose now in mind calls for its employment over hilly country which introduces some tricky flying eojnplications. The successful topdressing of hill country from the air would benefit considerably our own district. Much of the Manawatu country lies along the ranges and then westward of these in the hills about Apiti. The economical topdressing of these pasture lands could raise production appreciably.
