Pohangina

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Valley residents gathered at the Baumai hall on Friday, November 2, and enjoyed an excellent concert staged by the Raumai school children. The items were as follows: Recitation, Lois Mitchell; play, Margaret McDonald, Vcr- , non Bockett, Catherine Loamy, Jacqueline Rowbotham, Valerie Edwards, David Rowbotham, Zina Edwards; recitation, Colin Harper; play, Peter Rowbotham, Joy Smith, Cliff Smith, Suzanne Balmer, Margaret McDonald, Catherine Leamy, Barry Rowbotham, ; Wilson Smith. There were also folk dances. Barry Rowbotham returned thanks to all present for their attendance and expressed gratitude to Mrs. D. Balmer for her help at the piano. , Mr. B. Bockett thanked Miss Peacock for the entertaining concert. The children then held tho floor and danced. The Lucky Gay Gordons was won by Annette Leamy and Barry Rowbotham. Vernon Bockett and Wilson Smith were the winners of the Lucky Spot Waltz. The children’s half of the evening then concluded with free ice-creams for all and supper. Adult dancing continued until one o ’clock. The Lucky Gay Gordons was won by Mr. Kevin Balmer and Miss Vernon Bockett. Competitions I were won by Ray Edwards and Mr. Bockett.

Mr. and Mrs. F. Kling have returned from a holiday at the beach. Friends will regret to know* that Mrs. Clapham, of Awahou North is in hospital. The Stevens family and Alison Stuart, of Mount Richards, have been staying at tho Paraparaumu Beach.

Miss M. Stephenson, of Awapuni, is visiting her friend, Miss Lynotto Drummond of Pohangina.

Mrs. Tews has just returned from Christchurch where she attended a relation’s 101st birthday party. Errol Drummond is home from the Canterbury University. Miss J. Roberts of Mount Richards, is on the way home from Auckland where she lias been on holiday. Mr. A. Jones of Ashhurst is on a teacher’s observation course at the Pohangina school. Miss M. Klink is leaving shortly for a visit to relations in Otaki.

Mr. and Mrs. D. Spelman and daughter, Mary, of Awahou South, recently paid a weekend visit to friends in Hawqra. Mrs. Stanton is with relations in Christchurch. Miss L. Della, Awahou South school teacher, spent last weekend with her parents in Carterton. Pupils, parents and a number of interested residents of Raumai and Pohangina school districts, gathered at the Raumai School for tho annual ! judging of calves and heifers on Tuesday, November 6. After several weeks of boisterous weather the day was all that the childron could desire to put the final gloss on their charges. The i visitors included Mr. I. W. Mudford, j member of the Wanganui Education j Board, Mr. Lange, of Wanganui EduI cation Board who organises and conducts the annual competition, Mr. Andrews of Whakarongo (judge) and assistant Mr. S. Warner, a member of the Y.F.C. Mr. Lange, in introducing the judge, explained that in future a member of the Y.F.C. will accompany the judges for training as future judges. Fifteen calves, five yearlings and three 2-year-old heifers were paraded before the judge by the combined schools. Results have already been published. In the absence of Mr. Lewis, chairman of the Pohangina school committee, Mr. Passey congratulated the children and returned thanks to the Raumai school committee for placing their grounds at the disposal of the Pohangina children. Mr. Passey also commented favourably on the thoroughness of the judging and tho very instructive remarks of the judge. After Mr. Mudford had ad--1 dressed the children and presented the award cards, Mr. Passey presented the Pohangina compe' itors with cash prizes. A special prizo of half a-guinea for care in rearing, donated by Mr. E. A. Hockley, went to Dawn Stevenson. Speaking for the Raumai school committee, Mr. E. Leamy congratulated the children for the interest shown and thanked the officials for an instructive demonstration. Mr. Leamy also expressed the pleasure of his committee at being able to extend hospitality to the Pohangina children and parents and the desire of liis committee to offer permanent hospitality and accommodation Ito the pupils in the near future. Mr. Leamy’s concluding remarks, being purely of local interest, caused laughter and good humoured interjection Cash prizes were then handed to Ra mai competitors.
