Central School

In the absence of Mr. J. Wesney, Mr. L. Weld presided at a meeting of the Central School Committee. The headmaster (Mr. Y. Colville) reported that tho school started with a roll of 583, compared with 563 at the beginning of last year. Good progress had been made in connection with swimming and 74 pupils had been taught, of whom 40 could now swim 25 yards and 33 50' yards. Niue pupils h- ’ gained certificates for 220 yards, five for SSO yards, four for 900 yards, and one for 1000 yards. It was hoped to hold a carnival soon. Messrs Wesney, Weld and the secretary (Mr. J. Croll) were appointed to represent the school on the Manawa-tu-Oroua School Committees’ Association. According to members of the visiting committee, the grounds were a credit to the new caretaker (Mr. W. K. White).
