Landing Most Successful Feat of Arms in History
Beceived Friday, 9.45 p.m. LONDON, Sept. 1. “Tbe Normandy landing was the most successful feat of arms in history,” said Lieut.-General Nye, Vice-Chief of the Imperial General Staff, in a broadcast. “The British Army which formed the hinge of the door in the Caen area was allotted the vital but unspectacular task of fighting a series of solid, tough and bloody battles in close and difficult country where little headway could be made and there were few large towns to be liberated. “There were three essentials to that battle: Firstly, thorough imaginative staff work which 'was begun two years before D Day; secondly, a high standard of generalship—our commanders never once put their foot wrong; Thirdly, first-class fighting troops—Britain never produced better.”
