Noted Stratford Astronomer Dies
Close and intense, scientific research with particular attention to astronomy and the advancement of theories that were accepted by tho scientific world, made Mr. A. W. Burrell, who died at Stratford on Wednesday in his 80th year, one of Taranaki’s most highly respected personalities. Among his achievements was tho building of the observatory on Maryland Hill, Now Plymouth. Born at Kaikoura iu 1864, the eldest son of Charles and Elizabeth Burrell, Mr. Burrell spent his youth at Little River, Banks Peninsula, from where ho moved with his parents to the Stratford district in 1881. Ho was for many years in charge of a survey party and was responsible for tho surveying of many roads and blocks of land in the Taranaki Province, and at Waihi, in the Coromandel Peninsula, during' the gold rush at about 1597. Mr. Burrell is survived by his wife, Mrs. M. E. Burrell, three daughters, Mesdames D. E. King (Tinmru), A. K. Linchan (Palmerston North), J. E. Little (Duiedin), one son, Mr. N. R. Burrell (Hawern) and two brothers, Messrs G. Burrell (Stratford) and S. Burrell (Milford, Auckland).
