Art Display at Library
The attention of art-lovers is drawn : to a very interesting display at the Public Library (downstairs) of pic-j tures mainly by Now Zealand artists oni loan to the City Council’s Art Committee. Tire pictures include oil and pastel portraits, and oil and water-colour | scenes of a high .technical standard, l’he three portraits (lent by Mrs. R. I Davis) executed by the late Mina Arndt depict feminine childhood, youth' and age with appeal and variety of at- 1 tack. The foreign scene, is variously portrayed by Archibald Nicoll in “Beene in Concarneau” (lent by Mr. j J W. Rutherfurd) and “Italian Fishing Village” by B. Fletcher (lent by Mrs. i F. Road), two very attractive watercolours. “Pipirila Cliffs, Wanganui River,” by 11. Linley Richardson is! outstanding, being unique in theme and 1 treatment. T. A. McCormack is ropro- , sented by a watercolour of Sydney Mar-' oour which though slight is character-, istie of hi 3 use of colour and light. B. Munro Wilson’s impressive watercolours, ‘ ‘ Mt. Egmont ’ ’ and ‘ ‘ Tho j Meeting of the Waters, Taranaki”, (lent by Mrs. F. Read) subdued in col-1 our but broad in treatment, show yet J another type of Now Zealand scenery. I The throe oils, “Sunset” by Marcus' King, (lent by Mrs. F. Road) and Basil j Honour's “Kaihoue, North Auckland”] and “Routeburn Valley” (lent by Mrs. Webster) all treat the rugged grandeur associated with the New Zealand scene.* A typical Australian scene is attrac- 1 tively shown in W. Anderson’s “Stone House, N.S.W.” (lent by Mrs. N. DJ Stubbs), whose command of delicate colour harmonies is shown in his “Otira Gorge. ” The lack of a gallery in Palmerston North is somewhat mini mised by the willing cooperation of public-spirited citizens who lond pictures to theßO shows, and tho general public is urged to support and follow
lup tho changes of pictures every six ! weeks rnado possible by such CooperaJ tion with the Council’s progressive step. I LOOK FOR THE BRIGHT, REDI YELLOW AND BLACK CARTON.
