Marist Brothers’ High School

An excellent attendance witnessed the 4th annual boxing tournament of the Marist Brothers’ High School held in the Opera House on Saturday night. In all, 30 bouts were contested and the high standard set by the boy's in previous years was well maintained. A particularly fine bout was seen in the final between F.’ Hubbard and V. Toohey, w r hen the spectators were treated to an exhibition of the basic principles o' boxing. The director, Brother Oswald, in his address beforo the commencement of the tournament, expressed his thanks and that of the boys for the assistance rendered by the Manawatu Boxing Association, Mr. Hilmer for the erection of the ring, the trainers, Messrs. C. Mcßae and O. Warne, Dr. Peach who conducted the medical examination of the 56 contestants, the donors of trophies and Mr. F. Murphy and house staff. At the conclusion the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mausford), after congratulating the Brothers and boys on the very fine tournament staged, presented the following trophies: “Bourke” Cup for House points, St. Peters 69, St. i . -uicis 54, St. Johephs 40, St. Pauls 40: “Hodgen’s” Cup for consistent training, Con Toohey; “Broderick” Cup (miniature presented by Mr. Ineson) most scientific junior, M. O’Connell; “Peter’s” Challenge Cup (miniature presented by Mr. V. Hannah) for the most improved boy since the last tournament, Dick Shaw; “MacManus” Cup and miniature (presented by two anonymous donors), most scientific senior, H. Mcßedmond; “Carey” Cup (presented by Mr. H. Carey) for the most aggressive junior, Peter Couper; “Quennan” Cup and miniature (presented by Mr. Queenan) for best straight left, Neil Callahan; Light Heavyweight Championship (medal presented by Mr. J. McMillan) Leon White; Final Challenge Bout (trophy donated by Mr. J. McMillan) F. Hubbard. The following are the details of the bouts, the Houses being St'.
