Rongotea

(From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a large attendance of residents at the concert and dance given in honour of L.A.C. Keith Amies and O.S. Allan Luxford. Mr. E. N. Rowe, speaking on behalf of the R.S.A., mentioned that some 100 members of the services had been farewelled in Kongotea during tho past four years, and Allan Luxford was the third sou of Mr. aud Mrs. F. Luxford, of Carnarvon, to 1 be going overseas. The chairman of the Social Club (Mr. Amey) made a presentation on behalf of the residents of the district, to each of the guests. A splendid concert programme was rendered by members of the R.N.Z.A.E. from Ohakea, with the assistance of Mrs. W. A. Churchill at the piano. Varied instrumental items (banjo, cornet, saxophone and pianoaccordion) were provided by Corporals Baxter, Richards, Herd and A. C. Palmer; vocal, L.A.C.'s Stevenson and' Stevens; humorous monologues and tap dances, Corporal Walsh. Music for the dance which followed was provided by the Bulls Patriotic Band.

For some time the Young Farmers’ Club has experienced difficulty in obtaining suitable speakers from outside to give addresses and sought the help of experienced and interested local speakers. At a recent meeting Rev. C. M. Roberts gave a talk on “Farming in Relationship to Public Health.” Alter quoting from the Year Book as to the large number of medical and mental hospitals in the Dominion, and the excessive sickness rate among the population, Mr. Roberts went on to speak of fertilising methods by which the health and disease resistance of plants, animals and human beings could bo made to benefit, through improvement of soil conditions. It was decided to hold a church parado early in October. Members of Kongotea and Carnarvon Institutes met on Wednesday, when the packing of some 64 purcels, addressed to district boys serving overseas, was dealt with.

The euchre and dance held by the Kongotea Patriotic Committee proved an outstanding success both socially and financially and the promotors are to be congratulated on their efforts to fill the Kongotea quota. A “barometer” showed the amount aimed at and during the evening the people watched its rise with interest. A chocolate wheel also created a new interest with satisfying results. The prizes for the euchre, which were donated by Messrs. McKelvie and Gibbons, were won by Mesdames Fox and Slattery and L.A.C. Keith Amies and Mr. Upton. Mr. Fox thanked all those who had worked so strenuously to make the function a success, by donations, etc., and the ladies for their efforts with a sweet stall as well as attending to supper. The Patriotic Committee benefited to the extent of £3B and this, together with Tangimoana’s donation of £8 5s fid, leaves Rongotea still short of £l3 2s 6d, for its quota for the National Patriotic Appeal. As there is at least one other function to take place, the committee is confident of obtaining the full amount*
