Te Arakura
(From Our Own Correspondent.) On a recent Saturday the hall was well filled when residents gathered to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Hume and family and Mr. J. B. Young, who are leaving the district to reside in Palmerston North. Visitors were present from Palmerston North, Feilding, and surrounding districts. Mr. J. W. R. Stewart acted as M.C., and spoke of the loss the district would suffer in the departure of Mr. and Mrs. Hume, who had been associated with every move;neut over a long number of years. Mr. P. Hausen made the presentation to Mr. and Mrs. Hume, of a dinner set, salad set aud extras and spoke of his association with Mr. Hume on the school committee over many years. Other speakers from committees with whom Mr. and Mrs. Hume were associated, were Mrs. H. M. Whisker (Women’s Institute), Messrs W. E. Thomas (Hall Society), J. M. Durie (Patriotic Society), A. E. Wilkins (Home Guard aud R.S.A.); D. T. Johnbton (Primary Producers’), R. T. Griffin (E.P.S.), R. Goffe (Maori residents;. A gift of two volumes of the history of New Zealand was made to Mr. J. B. Young, who has resided in Rangitikei Line since 1904. The evening was spent in dancing interspersed with items. Contributing artists were Mesdames E. A. Golding and Graeme Parker (vocal solos), Misses Audrey Firth, Thelma Griffin, aud Master Don Irwin (vocal solos), Miss Dorothy Goodman (piano-ac-cordion solo), and Miss Jeau Goodman (elocutionary items). Accompaniments were played by Mesdames Irwin and D. T. Johnston, Miss D. Parker and Mr. E. A. Golding. Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Bryant and family, of Southern Hawke’s Bay, have laken up their residence in the district. Mr. Bryant has purchased the market garden property on Rangitikei Line from Mr. J. J. Hume. Mr. J. B. Young is staying in Feild ing as the guest of Mr. S. and Miss M. Smith. There lias been some noticeable growth in the pastures recently, but the heavy falls of rain are keeping paddocks very wet. Much of the grass is being tramped under. At a meeting of the Te Aralcura Patriotic Society, the resignations of Mr. J. J. Hume (chairman), Mrs. Hume and Mrs. B. M. Galloway, who are oil leaving the district, were accepted with regret. Mr. J. W. R. Stewart was elected chairman and-Mrs. A. E. Wilkins and Air. J. Cheetham were elected to the committee. Miss M. E. Hansen read a statement of money collected and expended ou Xnias parcels for district soldiers overseas. Appreciation was expressed of the work of tlio buyers, Mesdaraes F. M. Bradley and W. E. Thomas and the excellent parcels.
