British War Prisoners Will be Set Free
LONDON, Sept. 8. The revelation that the armistice was actually signed on September 3, on the day the British landed on the mainland, explains why the Italians have been offering no resistance, says the Associated Press. It is now clear that Badoglio had no intention of resisting and, as the Algiers radio stated, the cessation of hostilities was fixed at the time most favourable to the Allies. The immediate release of about 80,00') British war prisoners in Italian hands will unquestionably be an armistice condition, says Reuter. Recent reports indicate that about 2000 British prisoners were smuggled out to Germany, but the Allied bombing of the railways frustrated the German plan to speed up the transfers.
