Italian Sailors Asked to Save Ships
(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 8. Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham (Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Naval Forces in the Mediterranean) to-night broadcast an appeal to Italian sailors to make immediately for Mediterranean or Russian Black Sea ports. The forces of the Allied nations, the message said, were on the watch and .vould protect them. Admiral Cunningham promised that merchant seamen, if they preserved their ships intact and joined the Allies, would have an opportunity for further sea-going employment, but to all the Italian sailors who could not escape he said: "Scuttle your ships rather than let them fall into the hands of the Germans to be used against-Italy.” A correspondent points out that Italy still has a navy of considerable size. She has seven battleships, three cruisers building, two heavy cruisers (both damaged), and nine light cruisers, with two others nearing completion. In addition Italy has about 25 destroyers, some 60 submarines, and trawlers, minesweepers, and escort vessels.
