TRENTHAM CANDIDATES IN ACTION AT AWAPUNI CONDITIONS WERE GOOD FOR SEMI-FINAL* GALLOPS The feature gallops at Awapuni yesterday morning were those of Happy Ending, Rink and Gladynev over a mile, of Damask and Stairway over seven, Caroline Bay over five, and Lady Spiral ana Nighean over six, and of Screen over four. The course proper was in great order, but the flags were wide out. Happy Ending (V. Sellars). Rink (W. .T. Broughton) and Gladynev (C. A. Bowry) were away to an oven start and Rink set them a sound pace. They ran the last five in 1.8 3-5 and the last three in just over 40 to complete in 1.49-1. Happy Ending and Rink, going very smoothly, were together a couple of lengths in front of Gladynev at the finish. They all look to be iii good nick for Trentham. Damask (Bowry) and Stairway (Broughton) were companions over seven. Stairway appeared to be doing the better of the two at the finish and he ran the full distance in 1.35. £*ady Spiral (Broughton) and Nighean (S. Andrews) were responsible for the best effort over five. They ran the first three in 41 and they finished keenly in 39 3-5 to complete in 1.20 3-5. It was quite an attractive gallop. Pay Roll (E. Temperton) covered six in 1.22 2-5. Flying Hawk (J. Bowness) sprinted six in 1.21 3-5, coming home really well in 40. War Effort was clear of Sea Quex at the end of six which took 1.22, the last three being covered in 40. Caroline Bay Bowry), a brilliant track worker, sprinted five in 1.6, the last three in 40. She looks to be in good order for the Railway. Hinepo (Bowness) was in front of Quick Decision (Andrews) at the end of six, the last three taking 41 2-5. Kanui te Pai (Broughton) and Poutu (S. Anderson) went well over five in 1.6 3-5. Colerica (Broughton) took 1.7 2-5. Screen (Broughton) was not required to do her best over four, but she travelled fast in cutting the distance out in 52. She came home strongly in 38 and she should take some beating in the Plunket Handicap on Saturday. Alethea (A. Midwood) cantered round to the three and came home easily in 41. She is not engaged at Trentham. Young Charles and Greek Effort worked over five in 1.10. Lord Cavendish (Jemperton), and Moderate (J. Fagan), and Renascor (Temperton) were schooled over three fences, all jumping satisfactorily. LIGHT PROGRAMME AT TRENTHAM YESTERDAY. Although conditions for training at Trentham yesterday morning were wellnigh perfect, there was not a great deal of activity (states “Binocular” of the Post). What galloping was attempted was undertaken on the plough. The only visitors to hand were Kindergarten and Falora. The former looked all tht» better for his outing in the Taranaki Stakes on Saturday and was anxious to stride out in his pace work. With W. J. Evans in the saddle he bowled along over a couple of rounds under a firm hold. Palora had her fellow Railway Handicap candidate Soutane as a partner over live furlongs, coming home the last halfmile in 49 2-ssec. Although Palora had a neck advantage at the post, neither was doing her best Given a test over a mile, Manutere came home solidly to complete in 1.45. Yurilla, who went with him in the early stages, dropped out in the straight. Manutere, who is a half-brother to Little Robin, claims an engagement in the Champion Hack Handicap. Incidentally Little Robin, who broke down when having his fii'st start for some time at Waipukurau in December, is making progress towards recovery. The big, rangy Te Ngarara, who has undoubted speed over a short course, was ahead of Nantuckey at the end of five furlongs, the last half-mile covered in 50sec. Moutoa Bond, one of Trentham’s two representatives in the Thompson Handicap, strode out freely from beyond the live-furlongs peg, coming homo the last half-mile in good style in 50 2-ssec. Transcript and Flahuluk were partners over five furlongs, the last half-mile covered in 51 2-ssec. Transcript was doing it the better at the close.
