Position of Uneconomic Farms

Pc-r Press Association. WELLINGTON, Mar. 9. For some time the activities of a special committee set up by the Government to investigate the position of uneconomic farms under the Discharged Soldiers’ {Settlement Act have been in suspense, says a statement issued by the N.Z.R.B.A. “In reply to representations made by the headquarters of the Association the directors of the State Advances Corporation have given an assurance that ‘the Corporation is willing at all times to make a special investigation of any suitable cases brought before it by tho N.Z.R.S.A. Upon receiving a report on these cases the directors of tho Corporation will confer with the Uneconomic Farms Committee as to what action should be taken.’ “The Uneconomic Farms Committee was set up in 1939 as a result of a conference between the officials of the State Advances Corporation and the Lands Department for the purpose of endeavouring to effect an improvement in the affairs of soldier settlers where owing to premature age, physical disabilities, lack of ability, small acreage and circumstances beyond their control, their holdings were uneconomic. The operations of this committee in the Canterbury district were most satisfactory to both soldier settlers and the departments concerned. Some farmers were removed to smaller holdings, some were granted their homesteads and certain smaller areas, adequate compensation where required was paid to the settlers concerned and war pension adjustments were made with the co-operafion of the Tensions Department. ’ ’
