High Vegetable Prices

WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. The shortage and high cost of vegetables in Wellington show no signs of casing. Spring cabbages, for instance, are usually from 2s to 3s a case in November, but this season they are fetching 20s and over. Hothouse tomatoes are much dearer than usual, though actually the supply has been maintained well, but in sympathy with other lines the price has risen substantially. New potatoes are very firm but the supply of old potatoes is small and the price of these has advanced to such a degree that new potatoes are actually more profitable. Fish and chip dealers, however, are of necessity buying old supplies. The position is said to be aggravated through restriction on Australian importations.
