Presbyterian Assembly

Per Press Association

TIMARU, Nov. 5.

The first business sessions of the Presbyterian Assembly were held todaj', over 260 delegates attending. A sessional committee consisting of representatives of all the presbyteries was appointed to consider the advisability of the appointment of a general secretary for the church. An overture on the subject from the Wellington Presbytery was supported by Rev. W. H. McKenzie, who said such an appointment should be mado by this assembly. The church needed a man who could act quickly with the representatives of other churches and with the Government. At present the lack of a general secretary placed a heavy burden on the shoulders of a number of Wellington ministers.

An amendment that the matter be deferred for one year was defeated.

The treasurer’s statement showed that the church had again shown, despite tho war, that it was determined not to allow its missionary enterprises to suffer through lack of funds. In spite of tho extra demands, congregations gave £30,925 of the £40,943 for which they were asked. Tho finance committee’s budget estimates, which were adopted, set out the amount required from congregations for tho coming year at £40,577. The committee suggested that the assembly should aim at £330 as the minimum stipend, but that £3lO be paid all ministers in 1942. After a brief discussion the matter was referred to the sessional committee.

Mr. L. B. Mushet, at present acting as general treasurer, was appointed general treasurer to fill tho vacancy caused by the death of Mr. V. G. Chapman. A continuance of a high standard at all tho colleges was revealed in the report of the Board of Education. The eight colleges had a total Toll of 1449, there being increases at five, while the remainder had successfully maintained their positions. Tho three principals at Scots College, John McGlashan and St. Andrew’s are on active service, while 300 old boys are also serving with the forces.

Discussing tho report, speakers stressed the need for the appoittlmeffl of chaplains at colleges, and congratulations were extended to Scots College on having the first chaplain. The conference of tho Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union also opened to day, all associations answering the roll. A welcome was extended to the delegates by the Mayoress (Mrs. W. G. Tweedy). A welcome was also extended by Miss Norrio Wilson, who is presiding.
