Women’s Institute
ALFREDTON There was a good attendance of members at the Alfredton Institute on Friday. Mrs. Hull presided. The meeting opened with the Ode, “God Defend New Zealand” and the prayer for peace. Mrs. Payne gave an interesting report of the council meeting held at Pahiatua last month. A school for in struction of officers will be held next Thursday at Eketahuna. There was a good display of pullovers and balaclavas for soldiers, knitted by members for competition, which resulted: Pullover, Mrs. Low 1, Mrs. Algie 2, Mrs. Hutchings 3; balaclava, Mrs. Low 1 and 2, Mrs. Dickens 3. Shortbread competition (packed in tins for overseas), Mrs. G. Napier 3, Mrs. Seymour 2, Mrs. Hutchings 3. Best bloom, Mrs. Seymour 1, Mrs. Weston 2, Mrs. Dickens 3. Mrs. W. Rolls and Mrs. Napier judged the competitions. An adjournment was made to the main hall, where members of the Women’s Auxiliary practised bandaging under the supervision t of Mrs. M. Stonewigg, after which afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames L. Smith, Clarkson and Seymour. The afternoon closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
