APPEALS HEARD IN FEILDING At the Feilding Courthouse yesterday the District Manpower Committee, com- ( prising Messrs. G. A. Monk (chairman), j W. G. Black and C. R. Murphy, heard a number of appeals concerning rc- ( servists who had been called upon for f Territorial training. Mr. Worthington ‘ appeared on behalf of the Crown. ‘ An adjournment sine die was granted in the case of Norman Guylee, farm manager, whose mother stated that her • eon had no assistance on the farm. It ‘ was stated that reservist’s brother was . serving overseas. Mr. Worthington informed the committee that the reservist 1 had been classed as temporarily unlit > ! but was liable for Territorial service and arrangements would require to be made for relief during the period of his training. On the ground that appellant was not ’ a member of the class called up in the last ballot, the committee allowed the appeal of Frank Arthur Fred Campbell, mercer, of Feilding. lii the case of Albert Stanley Young, farm labourer, whose mother appealed on his behalf on the grounds of undue < hardship and public interest, the committee granted an adjournment until ; the next sitting. .The reservist meanwhile is to endeavour to arrange for relief labour. Burne Brothers appealed on behalf of Leslie John Burne, farmer, on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest. This case was adjourned sine die, as reservist was temporarily unfit. William McKenzie, farmer, appealing on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest, stated lie was a returned soldier and was conducting largo farming interests. He had seven brothers. An adjournment sine die was granted. A like adjournment was granted in the case of Frederick Walter Gray, farm manager, who was appealed for by his mol her, a widow. Counsel told the j committeo that no appeal had been lodged in respect of another son. The appeal of L. T. McLean on behalf of Alec Gordon-Glassford, farm manager, was withdrawn on the application of counsel, Mr. C. E. Taylot. The appeal of Messrs. Thos. Borthwick and Sons on behalf of Ormond Willis Charles Hight, slaughterman, was dismissed, the reservist not to be called upon for military duty before June 30. An adjournment until the next sitting of the committee in Feilding was made in the case of William Power, farmer, of Colvton, who appealed on the grounds of undue hardship and public interest. The trustees in the estate of the late Ernest Short appealed on behalf of Alexander Scotland, stud stockman, and the committee granted an adjournment until the next sitting of the committee in Palmerston North. , Alike adjournment was granted m the case of James Alexander Florence, labourer and contractor. The committee reserved decision in the case of the appeal of Larsen and Co., farmers, of Cheltenham,-on behalf ‘of Orlando Edward Larson, fanner. In support of his appeal for Kenneth Oliver T remain, farmhand, Thomas Hoskin Tremain, stated that he had two sons serving with the forces and he had been unable to obtain labour. Decision was reserved. The appeal of James Stock, farmhand, employed on the Manson estate at Stanway, was dismissed after the hearing of evidence by the farm manager. For the reason that their services would not be required until June, the appeals lodged bv the Feilding. Bacon Company on behalf of Stacey Crichton, labourer, Clarence Garfield Fisher, bacon factory assistant, and Arthur Frederick Liddall, slaughterman, were withdrawn. It was stated that as the season would be finished by then the men could be spared for camp.
