Training to Begin on July 1

WELLINGTON REGIMENT UNIT FOR HOME DEFENCE Per Press Associui.uti. WELLINGTON, May 22. Officers and n.c.o.’s of the First Battalion of the Wellington Regiment are being called on June 1 for a months’ training at the Central Military District school of instruction, Tauherr nikau, prior to the calling up of men of the unit on July 1, said Colonel Dow, officer commanding the Central Military District, to-day, in a statement dealing with the arrangements In his district for the home-defence training scheme.

The men will be trained during the day on various available grounds in Wellington and will live at their homes. The training is to be carried out on six days each week for three months on much the same lines as that undertaken Ly the Expeditionary Force units, with xifle, light-automatic and machine- gun ccurses at Trentham. The men wii. be medically examined to a standard for home defence.

In regard to Class two of Lie National Reserve, Colonel Dow said that a conference of area officers and representatives of the reserve organisation in Wellington was held on Monday and arrangements were made for the immediate organisation of the necessary companies throughout the district Those attending the conference expressed the opinion that there would be no difficulty in raising the number of men required. The men would also be required to pass a medical examination to home-service requirements and would be clothed and equipped as the Territorials are.
