Oroua County
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL The Oroua County Council met on Thursday, Cr. A. Campbell (chairman) presiding. Thero were also present Crs. R. Stewart, A. B. Shannon, B. McLeod, W. McLennan and T. Green. Tho chairman thanked councillors for their expression of sympathy in his recent indisposition. Correspondenco The following correspondence was dealt with:— From the Public Works Department, setting out details us to the payment of subsidies with regard to removal of telephone poles made necessary by load works. —Tho chairman said that the arrangement would be very satisfactory. From the Department of Internal Affairs, advising that arrangements had been made for supplies of the approved remedy for prevention of hydatids in dogs, and asking for particulars of quantity required.—The county clerk said that the information sought had been supplied. Last year he had not been able to obtain sufficient supplies of tho remedy. The chairman said that it was very necessary for the council to give close attention to this matter. From the Public Works Department, forwarding circular letter dealing with alignment of bridge approaches.—Eeferred to the county engineer. From tho Stato Advances Corporation, forwarding a circular memorandum covering the procedure in connection with advances to farmers under tne Bural Housing Act, 1930. Hold o\er for consideration. From Dr. E. C. Barnett, forwarding guarantee in connection with contribution bv settlers toward cost of Waituna stream bridge.—Tho counci decided to proceed with the work. From the Bunnythorpe Hall Committee, thanking the council for work done in front of the hall.-Rcceived. From the Ashliurst Cemetery Board, recommending the appointment of Mr. F. Dunstnll as a member of tbo board. V From ft. Alexander, asking that tlio erection of new cowsheds on Ferry Reserve be expodited.-The matter was left in the bands of Cr. Stewart, with power to act. The treasurer reported on the county finances ns follows ; -Total rates outstanding previous three years 31/3/39, natives. £746 18s 9d; Crown. £1 2s 2d European, £l9B 6s Id; total, £7249 7s od. Collected European arreas £l4O ZsM. Arrears outstanding at 14/12/39, £ll 3 4s 9d. Bates levied for current year, £15,370 13s 7d; collected to 14/12/“-' £3092 Ss sd; outstanding at 11/WoU, £ll. 67S 5s 2d. Biding accounts: Expenditure on maintenance (Western riding), £lO9l 15s Id; presented for payment, £44 14s Sd- expenditure on maintenance (Eastern riding), £1621 11s 10d; presented for payment, £2OB 11s. Bank balance, general account, debtor, £4116 17s 4d. Engineer's Report The county engineer (Mr. E. L. Harding) reported ns follows: — Eastern riding: Work in this riding has been confined principally to ordmarv maintenance work. The work of protecting the bank of the Oroua River at the end of Reid’s Line has been completed. A section of the footpath in front of the public hall at Bunnythorpe has been graded and sealed. Gravel repairs have been carried out on Siberia Road and portions clayed. One pipe culvert on this road has been re-set. An 18in. pipe culvert has been put in on Raukawa Road; these pipes were taken from the culvert on Siberia Road, as the latter had been replaced with a concrete box culvert. A slip on the outer edge of Spur Road has been fenced off, also one on the ColytonAshhurst road. One concrete pipe culvert has been put in on Spur Road and seven old wooden culverts in Aslihurst township have been replaced with concrete pipes. Tkeso consisted of five 9in. and two 12in. pipe culverts. Western riding: The work of preparing the Halcombe road for sealing has been completed and a start made with the application of the primer coat. Given reasonable weather conditions, this should be completed before tho holidays. Tho deviation on Makino Road is also ready for sealing. The crushing plant at Kakariki has been in operation supplying material for the Halcombe road; a reserve supply of gravel has also been crushed and dumped at Kakariki. A further reserve supply has also been crushed and dumped at the Mcnzies’ Ford crusher. An 18in. culvert on Reid’s Lino has been replaced with concrete pipes. On West Street hill the shoulders are being built pu and the bitumen surfacing is being widened on the inside of tho curves. Plans for the construction of tho balance of Halcombe Road have been completed, and will be forwarded to the Main Highways Board for approval as soon as specifications and estimates have been prepared.
