STEWARDS' CUP WON BY KNIGHT’S CAPRICE LONDON, July 25. On tho opening day of tho Goodwood meeting the following was the result of the STEWARDS’ CUP, a handicap sweepstakes with £IOOO added; second horse £IOO and third £SO; C furlongs'. Colonel T. H. M. Clerko’s b.h. KNIGHT’S CAPRICE by Knight of tho Garter —Gay Caprice, by Cygnus, 4yrs 1 Mrs. C. Jones’s gr.g. Faststep, by JVlilesius—Perceptive, 4yrs 2 A. E. Saunders’ br.c. Linklater, by Fleeting Memory—Maugere, 3yrs. 3 Twenty-three started. Won by three lengths, third horso a head away. Winner bred by owner, and trained by C. Brabazon, at The Curragli.
FROM VARIOUS SOURCES The first casualty since the acceptances for tho Grand National Steeplechase wero taken on Friday last occurred at YVasnuyko ou Saturday, when Black Banner, a fancied candidate, suffered a slipped shoulder muscle as the result of his fall at tae first fence of tho South Canterbury Steeplechase. During his career as a steeplechaser he haa made very low mistaKes and it was unfortunate that he oroKe i his good record so near tho approach of tuo big meeting. Cottingaam’s display on Saturday did not point to his prospects as a Grand National candidate, but his effort was affected by the slippery stato of the ground, lie jumped very high over his early fences, but did not lose much ground thereby, and seemed likely to improve as the race progressed. *.i.) w- , ever, ho took off a long way from the I first of tho stand double, and his hind feet appeared to slip from under him, and he hit the fence well down.
