Children's Night At Little Theatre

FIRST APPEARANCE COMPLETE SUCCESS Palmerston North Little Theatre Society is to be congratulated on the success which attended the initial presentation of the work of its junior division last evening before a large audience. The large number of young folk taking part revelled in their performances and in quite a number of instances displayed a talent for stage work which should lead to bigger things as they grow older. Much credit goos to the producers of the three playettes, namely, Miss Marjorie Millar, Mrs. E. L. Christian and Mrs. M. Wilson, the merit of the presentations revealing that they must have gone to a great deal of trouble in instructing the young players and preparing the several scenes. The children taking part were Dudley Payne, Phyllis Petersen, Suzanne Hewer, Jim McDavitt, Craig Mills, Christopher Small, Barrie Cousins, Murray Turnbull, Bobbie Ashcroft, Jack Dryden, Basil Drake, Brian Stout, Neville Drake, Robert Murphy, Dick Edgar, Ted Webster, Dorothy Hately, Peggy Wilson, Elenore Bennett and Dorothy Wright. In the absence of the president, Mr. H. G. Bagnall, Mr. G. Lush extended a welcome to parents and friends of the junior division and expressed the society’s appreciation of the work of the three producers. It was agreed, he thought, that the prospects for the juniors were bright. Mr. Lush then referred to the satisfactory negotiations that the society had made with the Palmerston North City Council for the leasing of the municipal hall, which would be converted into a small theatre. The society had been very happy in All Saints ’ schoolroom, but increasing membership necessitated looking ahead to the future. It was hoped that the final major production for the year would be staged iu the new theatre. In connection with the negotiations, the society was indebted to Cr. H. E. Townshend, chairman of the Opera House Committee, for consideration shown and advice tendered. Mr. Lush drew attention to the threeact play the society was staging in August iu aid of All Saints’ hall fund and announced that the Pohangina Drama Circle would be producing a oneact play as an introduction to the next play-reading night of the society.
