Protest From Bench

WITHDRAWAL OF CHARGES Per Press Association. GREY MOUTH, July 24. A protest against the practice of tho Transport Department, Wellington, in ordering the withdrawal of informations alleging breaches of the regulations, was made by Mr. R. Ferner, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. A traffic inspector said that he had received instructions to withdraw information against a motorist w T ho was charged with overtaking a vehicle when Ihe view was not clear. No reason was given for the withdrawal. The Magistrate said that others had made similar protests. Iu the absence of a director of public prosecutions it was the function of the Courts t 6 decide whether informations should be withdrawn. He adjourned the case for a week, and in the meantime he will consult the Department.
