Rugby Football in Manawatu

MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The junior and third grade competitions and representative fixtures were among the matters which received consideration at the meeting of the management committee of the Manawatu Rugby Union last evening. In the absence of Mr. A. M. Ongley, Mr. K. W. Eglinton presided. Others present were Messrs. H. R. Crawford, •J. R. Hardie, B. Palmer, J. A. Colquhoun, H. Hands, A. J. Galpin, R. L. Park, J. Eagle, E. Clevely, P. O. Skoglund and G. A. Brown (secretary). The Wellington Union suggested that the junior representative match be played at Athletic Park on August 26 as an early game to the CanterburyWellington senior fixture. The date was accepted. The Horowheuua Union asked that a date be submitted for the annual junior representative match to be played at Levin. August 19 would not be suitable. In regard to the Rowland Cup (contested by the champion teams of the two unions), it was advised that Otaki was the Horowhenua champion fifteen. It was decided to write to the Horowhenua Union expressing regret that the Manawatu Union was unable to fulfil the engagement owing to the number of junior fixtures. Mr. Brown reported that there were two games to be played in the junior competition, one of which would be won by Kia Toa by default, so that Kia Toa must be the ultimate winners of the competition. St. Patrick’s wero leading from Kia Toa in the third grade competition, in which there were about seven games to be played. It was decided to continue fixtures in these grades next Saturday, when the junior competition would be closed and nominations called for a subsidiary competition of one round. The University Club advised that its junior and third grade teams would have to default their remaining fixtures. Mr. A. E. Gendall, referee of the third grade match between Feilding Old Boys and Palmerston North Old Boys at the Feilding High School ground on July 22, advised that he had had occasion to order off the field a Palmerston North Old Boys player named K. Puklowski. Puklowski appeared before the committee and gave his account of the incident. It was decided to place the player on the caution list. \ Ashburton Match Messrs. Hardie, Eagle and Colqulioun were appointed an entertainment committee for the visit of the touring Ashburton team. As the result of considering the union’s request to submit the names of at least two referees for inter-provin-cial matches, the Manawatu Referees’ Association advised that it had decided to adhere to the existing arrangement whereby its appointment board nominated the referee for inter-provincial games. Mr. C. Eglinton was nominated for the Ashburton game. The nomination was accepted. The Oroua Sub-Union notified that its representative team was free to play the Manawatu B team on August 12, and asked whether that date was suitable. As August 12 was not suitable, it was decided to offer September 9 or 16. The headmaster of Mount Albert Grammar, Auckland (Mr. J. W. Gamble) wrote accepting the invitation for his school fifteen to participate in the quadrangular tournament at Palmerston North. Permission was granted primary schools to use the oval at the Showgrounds on Friday afternoon for a competition final. It was decided to play the final of the midgets competition (between Terrace End and Convent) on August 5. The Young Farmers’ Clubs’ seven-a-side committee applied for the uso of Rugby Park ou August 23 for playing the preliminaries of their seven-a-side tournament.—Granted. Captain Albert Gordon Store, who has been piloting Imperial Airways fly-ing-boats on the Empire service to Singapore and Durban for two years, has been appointed to the company’s Atlantic division and later in the year will probably pilot one of the flyingboats of the Cubot class to Canada and the United Stales.
