Country Home Destroyed

FIRE ON WHARITI ROAD FLAMES DISCOVERED BY CHILD The second country home to be burned to the ground recently was that of Air. and Mrs. A. D. Yuung, Whariti Road, five miles from Woodville, which was totally destroyed late on Thursday afternoon. A small amount, of furniture and clothing was saved from the front rooms.

Returning from school about 4.30 p.m., Pat Young, aged 12, noticed from the gate that smoke was issuing from the kitchen window. She ran down to the house and opened the kitchen door and saw that the room was full of smoke and flames were leaping from a hole above the mantelpiece. She called her parents, Airs. Young being in the washhouse and her husband in a shed 100 vards away.

Air. Young arriving on the scene realised that he could do nothing with buckets so the family, closing the doors to the back portion of the house, saved what they could from the front rooms before the quickly burning fire overtook them.

The dwelling was a fairly old wooden building, having live rooms. It was insured for £SOO, while the furniture was covered to the extent of £3OO, both by the National Company.
