Terrace End League of Mothers
SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY PARTY HELD The Terrace End League of Mothers celebrated its first birthday in the Coronation Hall yesterday, Airs. H. E. Townshend presiding in the absence of the president. The stage had been tastefully decorated with chrysanthemums, violets, berries and greenery and was most attractive. The league’s colours, blue and gold, were represented in balloons which were fastened to the top of tlio staging. Airs. J. Alewett carried out the secretarial duties for the afternoon in the absence of that official. Two city firms co-operated in presenting a birthday gift, one supplying two handsome brick pipes and the other artistically decorating them for use as greenery containers. Guests were the president (Mrs. McPherson) and members of the committee of the town league. The cake, which had been decorated in white and blue, with a gold candle, was a beautiful piece of handwork and during the afternoon tea break the camlle was lit by Airs. Alitchell, the oldest member present, and extinguished by the vice-president, Airs. Thwaites. Airs. H. E. Townshend then cut tho cake.
The speaker for the afternoon was Aliss Jones, of the Y.W.C.A., who interestingly outlined tho work of women in Australia, traversing Alelbourne, Sydney and Northern Australia. Following Aliss Jones’s address, duets were rendered by Mcsdames Keith Jones and Conway, while the singing of tho league choir was much appreciated.
A competition conducted to see whoso birthday conincided with that of the league was won by Mrs. Robinson, who comes all tho way from Afartou to attend league meetings. A lucky cup competition was won by Airs. Lady man. Following afternoon tea, tho drama circle, with Airs. R. Holmes as convener presented a sketch, those taking part being Alesdames F. AlcLaughlin, R. Mayo, W. J. Davies, C. Speight, Garrick and R. Holmes. Airs. Holmes substituted for one of the members from Paekakariki w r ho could not be present. Sprays were presented to Airs. Holmes and Airs. Prince, convenor of tho singing circle, Aliss Jones, the'
speaker, and Airs. Conway and Airs. Jones.
The singing of the National Anthem heralded the conclusion of a very jolly birthday party.
