Mrs. C. E. Lees, of Invercargill, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Lees, of Bussell Street.
Mrs. F. Robert, of Waipiata, Otago Central, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. Brown, of Napier Road.
The friends of Mrs. Bowater, of Colyton, will be pleased to learn that, although she is still confined to her bed, she is making good progress.
Miss Pamela Sandilands, of the nursing staff of the Wellington Hospital, is spending a holiday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. N. Sandilands, Feeding.
Mrs. J. Fitz Gerald, of Dunedin, is just now staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Harper, West Street, Feeding, and was among visitors to her brother’s wedding at Levin on Wednesday evening.
Miss E. Metcalfe, who has returned to New Zealand after spending several years in England and on the Continont, is staying with her father, Mr. A. H. Metcalfe, of Bainesse. Mrs. Maurice Palmer, of Roy Street, who went to Wellington to meet Miss Metcalfe, has returned home.
A meeting to discuss suitable arrangements for celebrating the arrival and work of the women pioneers was held in Wellington. It was convened by Airs Knox Gilmer as an executive member of the Wellington Centennial Celebrations Committee, on behalf of the executive of the women’s section of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, and Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, president of the section, was in the chair. Many suggestions were offered for the best way in which to celebrate the special day, and it was unanimously decided to hold it upon Anniversary Day, January 22, 19-10.
A pionoer of the Manawatu district, Mis. M. E. Cockburn, widow of Mr. James Cockburn, formerly of Rongotea, passed away in the Wellington Hospital on May 21, after an illness lasting five and a-half years. Deceased was tho eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Airs. Thomas Edwards, of Moutoa. She w r as born in Piritea Street, Wellington, in 1867, and at the age of three years moved with her parents to Moutou. She was twice married and her eldest sou and youngest daughters predeceased her, also a step-daughter. She leaves pne son, Air. Thomas Cockburn (Wanganui), and three daughters, Mosdames Trefferin (Los Angeles, California), H. Brooks (Napier, whose husband passed away at the same hour on Ihe same day as her mother), and S. Green (Wanganui). There are also three stepsons: Alessrs. R. Cockburn (Palmerston North), Charles Cockburn (Apiti) and Sidney Cockburn (Wellington), a number of grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Three sisters survive deceased. They are Alesdames Chamberlain (Los Angeles), Robert Kerr (Nelson), and A. C. Stansell (Henderson, Auckland). The funeral took place at the Lower Hutt Cemetery.
