Pope's Peace Proposal Rejected
Italy and Germany Refuse Conference Offer REASSURANCE TO VATICAN United Press Association.—By Electric 1 Telegraph.—Copyright. LONDON, May 11. The Romo correspondent of the British United Press learns ou good authority that Italy and Germany have rejected the Pope's proposal for a conference to discuss the dispute between Poland and Germany, on the grounds that the situation is not sufficiently serious to endanger tho peace of Europe. Vatican, diplomats, it is stated, received this assurance with a certain amount of optimism as indicating that Herr Hitler does ndt intend to precipitate a crisis at present. The correspondent of the Daily Telograpli in the Vatican City says it is officially stated that no peace conference will be held and that a Vatican encyclical on peace is not contemplated. The Pope will not preside at any peace conference anywhere. The Holy See has not proposed that it should mediate in any quarrel, but the Pope's diplomatists are exercising persuasion with several Governments for tho maintenance of peace. JAP OFFER OF MEDIATION NEWS AGENCY’S CLAIM TOKIO, May 12. Tho Asahi news agency asserts that Japan recently offered to mediate in the Danzig dispute between Poland and Germany. A later message says that the mediation report is officially denied.
