Work in the Borough

OFFICERS’ REPORTS TO COUNCIL The following were the officers’ reports received at the monthly Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening:— The clerk, Mr. D. Keay, reported that two drivers’ licenses and two building permits were issued during the month. Receipts totalled £384 2s 4d and payments £932 6s 2d. Foreman’s Report The foreman, Mr. L. Gronn, reported as follows:—“During the month the usual maintenance has been carried out. Three sewer and three water connections have been put in. Valves and fire plugs at McLean Street and V ogel (Street crossing have been re-packed. Fountaine (Square paths have had a coat of line cinders and rolled. On account of the quantity of leaves, it is not advisable to tar just at x jl ' esen t* Tho railway crossing has been tarred and sanded and will be patched with asphalt as soon as possible. A start will be made on Vogel Street footpaths in the business area next week. Tho new groyne at the intake has boen shifted about 15 feet from the spillway by tho flood. There is no immediate danger as the gap is filled up with small metal and takes tho force of big boulders during a flood. Tho rubbish dump has boen inspected by the health inspector and town clerk and myself, the inspector being quite satisfied. The reservoir is holding sufficient water to close the inlet for five days in tho event of a flood.” Wandering Stock The ranger, Mr. T. 8. R. Sehaw, reported the collection of one horse and three cows during the month. The poundkeeper, Mr. C. H. Hares, reported the holding of three cows. The Gasworks The gasworks manager, Mr. W. C. H. Petterson, reported that 16 tons of ooal had been carbonised to produce 166,530 feet of gas, of which 19,000 feet were unaccounted for owing to tho repairs in progress at tho works. Gas sales realised £ls, tar 14s, coke £4 15s 6d, fittings 5s Od and sundries £1 15s. Ho wrote: “I wish to report that all the services in Vogel Street have been renewed to comply with the reconstruction work and that over thirty have been dealt •with, 1200 feet of pipes being used. Water and gas mains at tho works have been renewed.

The contractor is at present engaged in the renewal of works plant and this work should be finished- about the end of the present month. The plant is working as satisfactorily as possible under present circumstances. One new service has been laid, one combination stove fitted and one caliphont. ”
