MUD IN VOGEL STREET
No Sealing This Season
RESEMBLANCE TO EARLY DAYS The present deplorable state of Vogel Street was the subject of some comment at the Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening. Cr. E. J. Harding asked for a clarification of the position regarding the street, and it was reported that the District Highways Council would not take the responsibility for sealing at the present time. In reply to a further question, the Mayor, Mr. R. R. Johnston, admitted the possibility of the road remaining in its present condition through the winter, though as it was consolidated by traffic it would improve. Cr. A. H. Hustwick remarked that he did not know which was thfc worse, Ao dust at the beginning of the week, or the mud now that the rain had started. The Mayor said it was regrettable, but the council could do little or nothing about it. The remark was passed that the muddy street resembled its condition in the early days of the town. Cr. Hustwick: It’s bad for business. Cr. Horne drew attention to the covering with earth of the lire plugs in Vogel Street. The matter will be referred to the clerk of works.
