Chamber of Commerce
MEETING HELD LAST EVENING The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce met last evening, Mr. H. L. Cunninghame presiding. Also present were: Messrs. H. J. Falkner, A. P. Stuart, M. H. Oram, F. G. Opie, F. J. Jolly, 11. E Townsheud, T L Seator and J. B. Stewart. Representatives of the Junior Chamber present were Messrs. P. B. Davidson, H. Latta, A. Beattie and D. M. Roche. The secretary reported that he had interviewed the town clerk, Mr. J. R. Hardie, with reference to tho City Council’s decision not to raise the fee for itinerant traders from £5 to £25, Mr. Hardie stating that the council’s view was that the fee charged at present was sufficient. Mr. M. H. Oram: Do you think it would be a good idea for a deputation to wait on the City Council? Mr. H. E. Townshend: I am quite certain that, if a deputation was formed, it would put a different complexion to the case. It was decided that a deputation consisting of Messrs. H. L. Cunninghame, W. M. Sexton, K. A. Henderson, S. I. McKenzie and K. Garner (Junior Chamber) should wait upon the council to state the views of the Chamber more fully. In response to representations made by the chamber to Wrigley’s (Australasia), Ltd., urging that the factory they propose to establish in New Zealand for the manufacture of chewing gum should be located in Palmerston North, Wrigley’s advised from their Sydney office that all points claiming attention would be considered before they reached a decision and that would probably take some months.
It was decided to write again to Wrigley’s pointing out that there was plenty of female labour available for manufacturing firms in the city.
