Russell Street School

PROGRESS IN LAST THREE YEARS An average yearly increase of 41 pupils over the last three years on the roll of the Russell Street School was disclosed by the chairman of the committee (Mr. J. A. Grant) at the meeting last evening. The school roll was 196 in 1936 and had increased to 328 in the third term of 1938. In the event of tho intermediate school being opened next year, 66 children would go there. Others present at the meeting were Messrs. R. Williams, M. N. Doig, U. S. Trask, A. Haines, R. McDowall and E. A. Christiensen.

The headmaster (Mr. J. Connor) reported that the school roll for the month had averaged 302.4 and the attendance 281.5. Tho average percentage of attendance for the month had been 93.9, which was the highest reached this year. Mr. A. Fletcher left during the month for a position in South Westland. Miss D. Oxnam had been confirmed in her position as supernumerary on the staff. Tho school was visited by the senior inspector (Mr. Doden), the superviser of infant departments (Miss Lowrie) and Dr. Moir and Nurse Cox of tho schools’ medical stall. All clashes from standard one to form two attended the Terrace End baths for swimming instruction from the middle of February until late in March. Certificates for learners were issued to 21 boys and 25 girls. There were 37 certificates granted for various distances. Mr. Connor extended his appreciation to the committee and headmaster of Terrace End {School for placing the baths at their disposal. As Rugby football would bo commencing after tho Easter vacation, he would appreciate a donation from the committee towards tlic sports fund, which was now depleted. The telephones for intercommunication purposes had been received from tho Post and Telegraph Department and would be installed at an early date.

It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Dr. W. S. V. Bransgrove for a donation of £5 5s he had made to the school.
